Concussion Guidelines

Minnesota law mandates certain procedures when an athlete is suspected of receiving a concussion.  All coaches must become familiar with the procedures for removing a player from a game or practice and the steps that must be taken before allowing the injured player back on the ice.  Essentially, if a player is suspected of receiving a concussion, the coach must remove him/her from the activity immediately and the player cannot return to action until cleared by a healthcare professional.

Coaches will receive concussion training in their CEP courses as well as in their coaching Modules.  This training should satisfy the Minnesota law referenced above.  Additional concussion and brain injury information and training is provided on the Center for Disease Control website.: HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training for Coaches - CDC TRAIN - an affiliate of the TRAIN Learning Network powered by the Public Health Foundation

Parents and athletes may take the training as well.

SELECTING ASSISTANT COACHES

Head coaches may choose any process they feel comfortable with to aid them in securing assistant coaches.  Once selected, however, the prospective assistants must submit a coaching application to the AHYHA Coaching Director for final board approval.  The board approval process must be completed before the assistant coach may take part in any team activities.  Coaches should allow a minimum of 72 hours for approval once the application has been submitted.  Keep checking this page for status updates with regard to this process -- as with any procedural change, there are bound to be a few procedural difficulties.
